Ironically my plans to liquidate this website and set up a new one for my photography reminded me that I hadn’t posted here in ages. So here’s a photo to keep things “fresh”. Seeing how useless I’m at building websites it will probably take a while before a new one is ready.

This photo got rather less attention than I thought it deserved on Flickr so when I decided to see if I had something to post here it got to be the first pick. And that implies I’ve decided to post something more here soon. Unfortunately it will also have been posted to Flickr already which makes me question the premise of this site. Intending to make a somewhat tightly edited photoblog I seem to have made a somewhat linear gallery. Something to for me to mull over, I guess.

I’ve snapped a lot of photos since I last posted here but none of them seemed to ask to be posted here. Anyway I’ve been busy thinking about other things to do with my photos.

This photo, however, pretty much asked to be posted here. It’s very typical of what I’ve been fiddling with lately but I also feel it’s a break from what came before. Whatever, I like it very much.

In other news I’m aiming to do a SoFoBoMo photobook project in May so until that’s over I may not be showing Snapshots From Falun too much attention. This photo may turn out to be representative for what my SoFoBoMo book will be like. I had settled on the title My Own Private Sweden but at the moment I’m indeed likely to change the project and book title to This Is Anywhere; the title of this photo.

This one, like the previous photo I posted, is from my last visit to Stockholm. I found this enclosure with the fenced off football pitch, where four boys played spiritedly, by chancing up a side street in Gamla stan. For some reason the place felt otherwordly. Like something out of a movie.

I desperately wanted to get a good photo of the boys playing and without them being aware of me. I manoeuvred to get a good shot and snapped this one exactly as one of them is falling to the ground. I kept walking and didn’t take any more photos of them.

I’m mostly using the 24mm Nikon lens for street photos now. I like the focal length and I like using the lens but I’m still not sold on the look of the photos from it. But then good and cheap options for moderately wide prime lenses, that is when mounted on DX bodies, hardly abound.

So this photo becomes a bit of a placeholder until I upload more interesting stuff. There’s one thing that makes this photo a bit special, though: It’s the first photo I snap with my “new” ‘71, or so, vintage Nikkor-N 24mm ƒ/2.8 lens and which I feel is decent enough to show people.

There will be more photos here made with this lens. Of the three I plan to post here soon two were snapped with it.

There’s a good side effect to that; it challenged me to finish post-processing this photo, as posted unprocessed earlier to Flickr, so I could update my blog.

The subject of the photo is Robert Olsson, vocalist and bassist of Benesser, during his band’s winning performance at band competition Garagerocken back in November.

This photo is something of a milestone as it’s the first I post anywhere, I think, that has involved localized editing, beyond what’s available in Lightroom, and layers. The poor D40’s sensor seems to have overloaded causing a bit of artifacting that I tried to fix with some selective blurring and cloning. I hope you don’t spot what I did despite this revelation.

First off: Happy 2009. I had a couple of photos lined up for this blog but never worked up the interest in post-processing them better as was needed before posting them here. Now I’ve worked my way through most of the huge pile of photos from December and decided to give some attention to my stumbling blog. Stumblelog? Is that something?

I had this photo, from late November, that I was quite pleased with and coming back to it didn’t hurt it too badly. There are some issues but there are also elements in it that almost make up for them. Let’s just say that if I don’t have people in my photos then I like to have man-made things in them. Even better if the man-made can somehow be contrasted with nature.

But this is turning the blog into navel-gazing with lots of words and not so many photos. I’d rather let you see what you see in the photos and briefly account for photographic circumstances myself. I think this is the first photo I post here that’s shot with my little gem of a telephoto, the Nikon E-Series 75-150 f/3.5. I had fumbled with photographing the factory and the sky with a wider lens to no effect. On the way back I saw something else to photo, didn’t make anything out of that subject either but then turned back and noticed the scene above. The telephoto zoom was on my camera and it all seemed to fit at the time.

I would probably have posted it back in November hadn’t Lightroom exported it to JPEG with some linear artifacts along the edges of the factory. I resorted to exporting to TIFF, resize the photo in Pixelmator, add a touch of sharpening – which I’m inept at – and then export it to JPEG. I hope you enjoy the results.
